Financial Services Organisation

Goals

Like many companies, this financial services organisation thought the way it worked was unique. It operated three separate IT systems, two of which were over twenty years old, and desperately needed to replace them with more integrated systems and processes. The company felt that there could not possibly be any software on the market capable of meeting its perceived needs. However, at the same time, it didn’t want to take on the risk of developing new software in-house.

Charteris' Role

The client appointed Charteris to help it evaluate its current business processes and build a future operation using new, automated processes. Initially, Charteris worked with a group of the most senior stakeholders in the company to help it clearly define its future goals and then to place realistic constraints around them. With quite a complex supply chain, the key to this was identifying and defining who the customer really was. Having got an unequivocal direction from the top of the company, the consultants then worked with operational employees to carefully identify the requirements for both new business processes and new financial systems.

Results

The business analysis and high-level system design work, that Charteris facilitated, provided the company with a clear and documented picture of its actual requirements. This information proved critical in helping the company to understand what it was looking for in a new solution. Charteris then identified three vendors that offered packaged solutions that exceeded the company’s requirements. As a result, the client has been able to dispel its biggest fear about upgrading its IT systems: it now knows that it does not need to undertake a long and risky in-house software development project.
