Wales & West Utilities - IT and Business Change Programme

Goals

When the consortium led by Macquarie Bank won the right to acquire the gas network for Wales and the West Country from National Grid Transco, it set out to establish a new autonomous utility company - Wales & West Utilities. However, the business was a complete green field site and, before it could operate independently, new systems and processes had to be built from scratch. Wales & West Utilities wanted to put in place a strong framework of integrated back office and front office systems to create an agile business - and it had to achieve this goal against a tight deadline.

Charteris' Role

Charteris drew on its experience to identify all the systems, job roles and organisational structures that would be required by the new business. It then used its proven methodologies to plan the project, taking into account the pressing deadline. To meet the needs of the new organisation, it then implemented SAP back office solutions and deployed a range of integrated best-of-breed front office solutions, including geographic information systems (GIS), mobile applications for field workers and street works notification systems.

Results

Charteris succeeded in implementing back office systems in just six months. In addition, Wales & West Utilities went live with its new front office systems in three stages, three months ahead of the deadline. Delivered on budget, the new systems and processes provided a firm foundation upon which Wales & West Utilities is now building its success.
